If you would like to contribute with data, please send copies of Oaths to
alanwillms@gmail.com. We are more
concerned about members from the early times. Our policy is not to share
the names of people who are alive, unless they want so.
First of all, this is not a complete list. Even the available names may have
missing grades and informations, due to lack of data.
You will note a Probationer (Frater Per Ardua) receiving other Probationers,
something that goes against the rules of the Order. He was an honorary
5○=6□ and had a special dispensation to enroll
other Probationers, until he left the Order on October 1910.
In one of the source materials, it is written:
Members 1 to 13 recruited in An IV (1909) including A.C. as No. 1
14 to 25 in 1910
26 to 48 in 1911
49 to 51 in 1912
Number 88 recorded in 1913.
However the source document ends at number 56. Most (but not all) of the
annotations between quotes were written in 1912 (☉ in ♑ An. VIII).
A small number of people were admitted as Probationers, and even fewer reached the
Grade of Neophyte. As Crowley states in his Confessions, chapter 62
(emphasis added):
[...] the oath of a probationer apparently involves no difficulties of any sort;
no penalties are stated or implied; the aspirant merely pledges himself
“to perform the Great Work, which is to obtain the knowledge of the nature
and powers of my own being”. He is not required to reach any particular
stage of knowledge by the end of his probation; he is free to choose such
practices as appeal to him; and, provided that his record shows that he
has devoted a reasonable proportion of his spare time to the Work, he is
unhesitatingly passed to the degree of neophyte. It sounds as if it were
impossible for anyone to fail. Yet, actually only 8% manage to get
through the year of probation. The reason is that no sooner does a
man make up his mind to enter the Path of the Wise than he rouses
automatically the supreme hostility of every force, internal or
external, in his sphere.
Membership
There is no entry for the co-founder George Cecil Jones in the
numbered register, nor could any oath be found.
